Orc Vengeance Update Improves Controls

One of the best games of the year has a significant new improvement to its control scheme. Orc: Vengeance, my favorite game to hit iOS in 2012, now has a virtual control stick and on-screen button layout that greatly improves the gaming experience. I found one can quickly attack enemies and maneuver through the game with much greater ease.

I find it more natural to play with the joystick, as the previous method of tapping where you wanted to go to become a little tiring over time. The new controls are positions so one can easily hold the iPad with two hands, much like a game controller. [Read more...]

Miss Tabs? Get Atomic Web Browser

Those who miss the tabbed browsing experience on a computer should give a serious look to the Atomic Web Browser for the iPad.

The iPad browser opens new links in tabs, just as you would on a desktop version. One of its strongest features is that maneuvering through the pages and tabs can be accomplished through a series of finger swipes.  For example, a two-finger swipe switches tabs. A three-finger tap enters and exits full-screen mode. Swiping up with two fingers sends you back to the home page and swiping down deletes the current tab. These can all be customized or attached to different commands to tailor the browser to your needs.

These are especially handy when browsing in full-screen mode. This option removes the address bar entirely and leaves only small icons in the corners for navigating, viewing all open tabs or returning to the traditional view. [Read more...]

Welcome to TheAppPlanet!

There are plenty of app review sites on the Internet. Some of them are very good at giving a quick review of the latest apps. Others are content mills that hire inexperienced writers to push out weak content.

None of that here at TheAppPlanet. The first value here is good writing – we plan to do in-depth coverage of the hottest and most compelling apps. Primarily our focus will be those for iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch) and Android. However, apps are everywhere: the desktop, tablets, even our TVs and appliances.

At TheAppPlanet our eye will always be on the big picture. Apps are the new web, revolutionizing how we access the Internet, acquire knowledge and run our digital lives. For better or worse, we are entering the era of Web 3.0. [Read more...]
