Tired of spending hours scouring through your music collection trying to create the perfect playlist for your dinner with friends, your after work workout, the party you’re throwing next week, or that special night in with your loved one? Songza is your solution.
Available across all platforms (Android, iOS, Kindle Fire, and web), Songza has a playlist for anything you could think of, for every occasion, and every time, right at your fingertips.
Simply create an account or choose the easy option and sign in through Facebook. I chose to sign in through Facebook and have noticed a couple of times it takes a few seconds before it connected to my Facebook, so don’t be discouraged. When I first started listening I had to log in every time I opened the app, making Facebook the quicker option, but now (after properly hitting “Menu” then selecting “Settings” and “Quit”) it’s better at remembering my log in.
Once logged in on the Android app you have the option of discovering a Songza music playlist by Genre, Activity, Mood, Decade, Culture, Record-Store Clerk, or Just For You. Under each category you’ll find more options. For example “Activities” have everything from “Barbecuing” and “Curing Road Rage” to “Lying Low on A Sunday Afternoon” and “Romantic Evening”. Each activity has a few playlist suggestions which you can save to your favorite collections for future listening or play immediately.
Songza stands out from other music services available by really wanting to cater to their clients’ every needs and showing it. And they do it without any verbal ads! By signing in you guarantee that Songza is creating playlists exactly to your wants. You have options of skipping songs and giving them “thumbs up” or “thumbs down.” With that information Songza puts together your “Just For You” suggestions.
One of my favorite features of Songza is the “Share” option. You can quickly post a tweet, Facebook status update, Google+ post, text to your friends, save to your notes, and more. This was handy when I found a new song I liked and wanted to remember it because I could simply share to myself via Notes or Email.
In the web and iOS versions (coming soon to Android) is the Music Concierge. Given the time and day it asks what you are doing and offers different genres for your taste and gives you a playlist based on your answers. I’m excited for this smart feature to come to Android as it’s been perfect knowing at 4 o’clock I’m at work and would like something upbeat but quiet, like what you hear at a coffee shop.
If you have a Kindle Fire you’ll want to check out Songza on there too. It features a landscape layout with room to keep all options open. You can scroll through quicker and even see snippets about a playlist before you click on it. The Kindle Fire app also features a Recommended homepage where, this week, it offered up a Guest DJ playlist by Ke$ha. Curious, I listened and was pleased to find some good classics and new songs.
Overall, whether you’re an Android or iOS user, spend most of your time on the web, or have a Kindle Fire, Songza has something to offer. Even without the new Music Concierge, the Android app is still one of the best free music options available. And if you are an Android user, be sure to check out Music Concierge on the web as the update is coming to Android soon.
