NFL Apps for 2012 Season

While the season is technically underway already, for most fans the true chaos of the new NFL begins today. Those looking to monitor multiple games and keep tabs on fantasy action have many apps from which to choose.

This year has the deepest selection of apps yet for smartphone and tablet owners. While the apps are free, getting the content isn’t necessarily so. Sunday Ticket requires a subscription, as does the audio pass feature in NFL ’12.

Click the requisite link to download the application from the App Store or Google Play. All iOS apps work across iPad/iPhone/iPod touch. While none of the Android apps listed are specifically optimized for tablets, most should work fine on a Nexus 7. Check on the Google Play page for each app to see if it is compatible with your device.

NFL ’12: One might as well start with the NFL’s official app. It serves as a great game-time companion; flicking through news stories, social updates, and other scores on an iPad during a game makes for a great enhancement. The NFL’12 Google Play page says developers are working on an update to optimize it for tablets. (App Store, Google Play for tablets; Google Play for phones)

Sunday Ticket: DirecTV customers can watch live NFL action by entering their account information. Streaming can be spotty over 3G networks for those using an older iPad. (App Store, Google Play)

NFL Team Apps: Many teams are rolling out their own official app, such as 49ers Gameday Live.  Expect this trend to continue with the 2012 season. (App Store, Google Play)

ESPN Fantasy Football: An official app that lets you manage and check our fantasy team status. Currently the iOS version is far more polished than the Android model. (App Store, Google Play)

Yahoo! Fantasy Football: Same thing here for Yahoo! fantasy owners. (App Store, Google Play)
