Duo Gamer Controller Review

If a new iPad was under your tree, you may have wondered if some of those first-person shooters could be better served with a controller.

Fortunately, the answer is “yes.” Fresh off of a discount, the Duo Gamer controller offers a well-built controller for navigating through Modern Combat or other games created by Gameloft.

Many of the initial reviews balked at its original price of $79.99, which was entirely too high. Gameloft appears to have heard this concern, recently dropping the price almost in half to $39.99.

Outside of feeling a little bulky with its awkward shape, the Gameloft DUO Controller is a great tool. It includes a stand that, while also a little large, does a good job at propping up the screen so it is at eye level.

The reason Gameloft is in the name is because those are the only games compatible with the controller. While partnerships are great, it is unfortunate that the game selection is limited to one company.

The current, full list of games that work with the controller include (links to our review) Asphalt 7: Heat, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation, Order & Chaos Online, Brothers in Arms 2: Global Front, and N.O.V.A. 3 – Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance.

The controller connects with Bluetooth. When it does so, it will require you to download a plugin from the App Store. Beyond that the process is fairly seamless.

When playing Modern Combat it felt very much like a console game – I was able to quickly pan the screen and fire off from my weapons with the hardware.

While the controller offers a good experience, it is still even a little high at the current price level. The main reason is because of the proprietary setup with Gameloft. While it is one of the better game makers, having a hardware controller limited to only one game publisher is a tough sell.
