ESPN Bracket Bound Feeds March Madness

2013-03-01 09.42.24

Anyone who is a dedicated or casual fan of college basketball should grab the 2013 edition of Bracket Bound. While it had a few too many bugs for my taste, it offers a great resource for staying on top of the season as we head towards the NCAA tournament.

For maximum performance log in with your ESPN credentials or via Facebook. I had to restart the app to get my ESPN account to take and had similar difficulties getting Facebook Connect to work on my Nexus 4. Once this works, any of your favorite schools saved elsewhere with your ESPN account will appear within the application. You can then

Bracket Bound 2013 also includes access to the Tournament Challenge, which is a pick-em style event for those who want to test their college tournament prediction skills.

By default push alerts will notify you of important game scores and down-to-the wire events. It may be overkill for some, but I appreciated the updates on a recent Saturday to how the Top 25 were faring against the competition.

My only lament is that it took all season for ESPN to update a dedicated college basketball app. While the college football app was ready for the entire season, college basketball again only seemed to pick up interest as the tournament approaches.  [Read more...]

My Tracks Follows Your Trail on Android

My Tracks  is one of the lesser-known Google apps on Android. It doesn’t get the same kind of rapid iterations as Gmail or Google Drive, but it has some nice features for tracking one’s trail while running or walking.

It has a very simple setup for starting the journey: just hit the button and then MyTracks will run in the background and gather data about your walk or run. Google’s power in data collection works to your advantage here, as the app can share the information with a variety of third-party services.

While some of the other power features found in other tracking apps may not be here, this does help give it something not found with many of the other competing applications. [Read more...]

Top Sports Apps for Android

All sports fans want to know the score to their favorite teams’ games in a fast and convenient way, and three of the top apps in the Android market are available just for that. ESPN ScoreCenter, ScoreMobile and Yahoo! Sportacular have all the options a sports fan is looking for.

ESPN ScoreCenter

ESPN ScoreCenter gives the user the ability to choose favorite teams from different sports and offers player and team statistics. A recap is available for past games and live play-by-play for in-progress games. Fans of their favorite sport can also chat live on a discussion board with other fans on the device. The widget is a sleek looking model but is a little slow on the updates for fast paced games such as basketball. Some scores do not change on the widget after the game is over and will stay there until the user deletes the team completely.

Alerts are a very important part of the experience of ESPN ScoreCenter but most users will have a hard time locating the option due to it being hidden in the recap section. ScoreCenter mimics the feel of ESPN and is very reliable on game scores but the app needs to be updated more often. [Read more...]
