Sonic the Hedgehog Launches on Android

Sonic 1_Screenshot 1The 16-bit masterpiece that stole many hours of my childhood is now on Android. Sonic the Hedgehog can be had for $2.99 on Google Play; it is still available for that same price on the App Store.

The classic has been remastered for mobile devices, complete with 60 frames per second graphics. The memorable characters are there, as the gameplay is virtually the same with touch controls rethought for mobile devices.

Given the game’s excellent reception it furthers the mystery as to why Nintendo has not jumped on board with a mobile edition of its popular games. Super Mario Brothers would likely garner millions of downloads, as Sonic has done rather well on iOS with multiple four- and five-star ratings from users. [Read more...]

Noble Nutlings is Quirky Fun

Noble Nutlings carries the subtle influence of Angry Birds into its clever use of physics and zany characters. The game puts players in control of a a group of legless squirrels piloting bath tubs and other unusual modes of transportation. Noble Nutlings is the work of Boomlagoon, a new gaming studio created by three former Rovio developers.

Players must tilt their iOS device (sorry Android gamers) to zip the squirrels through a variety of obstacles and airborne adventures. Noble Nutlings succeeds by offering customization and original characters in a very playable game.  [Read more...]

Angry Birds Star Wars Review

The Force has combined with the Angry Birds for another instantly popular game. Despite some skepticism that it was a gratuitous use of a commercialized Star Wars, I was genuinely delighted with Angry Birds Star Wars and recommend it as the best game yet in the series.

This isn’t just Angry Birds with a Star Wars wrapper. The game has been completely built around maximizing the integration of the Star Wars universe. The sound effects are straight out of the movies, with the iconic music and laser blasts. Both birds and pigs are reworked as Stormtroopers, Jedi, and other easily recognizable characters.  [Read more...]

Need for Speed Most Wanted Review

The Need for Speed series has been one of the top mobile performers for Electronic Arts. The latest, Need for Speed Most Wanted, pits you as an illegal street racer seeking to build up street racing cred. It has a similar plot-line to The Fast and the Furious, without the excessive sequels and bad acting.

I gave Need for Speed Most Wanted a thorough spin on an iPhone 4S and iPad. The experience was rather good, as you must not only defeat other racers but evade police and oncoming traffic. The controls are excellent, as you tilt to steer and swipe forward to activate a boost of nitrous. Brake or skis through turns with other simple gestures. If you prefer touch controls, activate them through the settings.

As with most racing games, you begin with a glorified clunker and then race your way to more winnings for auto upgrades. There is a good selection of cars to choose from, including some desirable, high-end brands like Tesla. Of course the carrot of upgrading with actual money is dangled in front of those who may be tempted by taking a monetary shortcut. [Read more...]

Pocket Climber is ‘Temple Run’ Style Action

Pocket Climber is action game that calls to mind the fast-flicking action of a game like Temple Run. You climb a never-ending skyscraper and flick your character to dodge pianos, bears, and several crazy obstacles.

Along the way you must collect coins, which will come in handy when you succumb to the obstacles. The more coins you accumulate the higher the level you can continue from. Each time you fall or are knocked off the buildings you must pay to be placed back at the same spot. As is the custom now Pocket Climber will of course ask if you want to spend actual money to boost your coins account. [Read more...]

The Amazing Spider-Man Review

The Amazing Spider-Man may be a hard game to resist for fans of the web-slinging superhero. The atmosphere closely resembles the popular film and familiar environment of the Spider-Man universe. Stylish Sprint Review

Stylish Sprint is a catchy game where you sprint, jump, and smash your way through worlds and high scores.

The controls are simple: “jump” on one side of the screen and “action”, used for things like smashing through barriers, on the other (these controls are customizable). Your little shadow figure automatically runs through the world and it is your job to pick up coins (worth SP – Style Points), bonus stars, and maneuver to the high score, longest distance, and to beat achievements.
