Sometimes a one-function game is all that is needed. Such is the case with Air Monkey.

The goal is to send a monkey flying through the air and land him at his happy home at the forest’s canopy. Playing is not mindless tapping; the player must calculate when is the proper time to launch the monkey from one vine to another. A misfire sends the monkey plunging to the Earth.

The journey can be perilous as there are some obstacles like falling branches to impede the passage. There are other things that are helpful, however, such as a balloon with a swinging rope that can carry the monkey up and quicken the journey. Don’t hang on forever, as eventually the balloon will pop.

Tilting the device to either side stretches the screen so the player can better plan where to leap to next. The key to success is really in the timing – for a longer leap, tap the screen when the monkey is still about midway through the upswing for the best momentum. However, be cautious of not overshooting targets. On a couple of occasions I was almost home but then overshot the tree house, sending the monkey to a different home in the sky.

Occasionally the screen would freeze for about a half-second when the monkey would perform a jump. The end result would not be impacted, but it was a minor distraction in an otherwise good experience.

Air Monkey’s strength is its simplicity. Users who like multi-level games with lots of customization should look elsewhere, but for those who like that simple game that kills a few moments while waiting in line, Air Monkey is one to consider.
